Prevent a Cold Sore Outbreak & Avoid Spreading the Virus

Know Your Cold Score Triggers

At the first tingle, you should be “on alert” for a cold sore. That means you need to take extra precautions until you are certain that an infection is recurring or that it is not. Do your best to avoid your triggers. This not only limits the number of times you have to experience cold sores, but also the times you can spread the infection to others.

Keep Your Distance (During a ColdSore Flare-Up)

Since any skin-to-skin contact with an active cold sore blister can trigger an infection in another person, you should avoid close contact if you have a cold sore or notice one on someone else. Remember that most people contact HSV as a child. Do not share any food, drink, straw, cup, lip balm, or anything that goes on or near your mouth – and no kissing.

Keep Your Hands to Yourself

There’s a good chance someone with a cold sore could inadvertently touch the affected area, and then touch another item. So, you need to be conscious about keeping your hands away from your mouth during an active outbreak. You should also wash your hands often and immediately after touching your mouth.
Active Ingredients: Benzalkonium Chloride (0.13%), Benzocaine (5%). Inactive Ingredients: Isopropyl Alcohol (70% V/V), Water.
Adults and Children 2 Years of Age and Over: Clean the lip area of any lip preparations, lotions, ointments, residual beverages, or cosmetics, including lipstick using only warm water and a washcloth; remove the cardboard cap from the applicator end and place the cardboard cap onto the glass/plastic vial end – opposite the brush end of the product; squeeze the cardboard cap to break open the inner glass vial; saturated the applicator end with solution by holding the brush end down and squeezing the container until you can liquid on the brush applicator; for best results, massage the solution into the cold sore by rubbing. Rub firmly, but take care not to damage the tissue. The purpose of the rubbing is to deliver the drug to the infection site. Hold the vial so the solution flows to the sore; to treat most cold sores, usually one treatment is enough. If your symptoms go away and then return later, apply does for the second cold sore; do not use more than 3 times per day; discard after use. Children Under 2 Years of Age: Ask a dentist or physician. Store at room temperature.
